William Spratling Mexican silver and amethyst "trunk" Pendant Necklace
A published piece from Spratling’s first design period, the hefty silver and amethyst “trunk” (often referred to as a “pill box” too) pendant necklace I am presenting here is awe-inspiring in its glistening beauty and stunning proportions. I will dare say that yes, the pendant is a… handful as the curved tops of the massive stone cabs perfectly fit the hollow of the hand. It is accompanied by a hand-made chain which complements it in volume and style, and even though it seems to have lost its original clasp and some of its length over its long life, I have no doubt that it is its original, Spratling chain. Don’t miss it…
Size / Weight: 1 1/2” tall (without the bail) by 1 1/4” wide by 1 1/4” deep; with the bail, the pendant adds a 1 5/8” drop to the chain; chain itself is 20 1/2” long; 100.3 grams (for the set; 52.4grms for the pendant / 47.9 grams for the chain)
Hallmarks / Date: signed as shown with a combination of hallmarks that date it to the 1940-46 period (see Hougart, Little Book of Mexican Silver, fig. S-63, p. 139, e-edition/ the two hallmarks are overlapping somewhat and the one on top is partially stamped but they are both there)
Condition: excellent vintage with impressive proportions, very tactile, with gleaming patina and chunky stones, with no damage and no repairs noted except for the obviously replaced clasp as mentioned in the description above
