ornate Mexican silver and carved stone "mask" Poison Ring

$0.00
SOLD

Poison rings seem to have been a favorite form for the maestros of Mexico’s 20th c. Silver Renaissance. They come in various designs, usually adorned with stones or glass and quite often, the carvings emulate ancient Aztec or Maya “masks”. Signed by a listed yet still unidentified silversmith, this massive example is adjustable thanks to its open shank, its green elongated “portrait” hiding the secret compartment that gives it its name. Danger and mystery hand in hand…

Size / Weight: currently a sz 6 US (adjustable thanks to its open shank); face is just shy of 1 1/2” N-S and 3/4” E-W; 12.2 grams

Hallmarks / Date: maker’s initials “RM” as well as “MEXICO STERLING 925” and Eagle 117 assay mark; 1950s-70s

Condition: excellent vintage, quite massive and ornate, with a nicely carved stone mask and beautiful patina, with no damage and no repairs noted - a true statement ring
