modernist studio silver and druzy pyrite Ring ~ signed JRM
Characterized by a strong visual presence thanks to that amazing, jagged chunk of druzy pyrite, this vintage sterling silver modernist ring is one of those mystery items once finds difficult to understand. For the longest time I had not noticed that it was signed - but as is usually the case, I saw the hallmark when I was preparing to photograph it. The signature is comprised of three initials ,"JRM", raised in a rectangular reserve. Now, there is a Mexican maestro who signed with these same three letters but the mark's style is not quite right and there are no other hallmarks that would allow me to safely call this a Mexican ring. I am thinking that it might just as well be European, possibly Swedish or English, with only partial hallmarks. Be that as it may, this is a striking example of modernist personal adornment - and I will go as far as to say it's brutalist because of the stone's “harsh” beauty...
Size / Weight: sz 7.5 US (easily resizable by your jeweler); face is 1 1/4" N-S and 3/4" E-W; a tad above 1/2" rise; 13.9 grams
Hallmarks / Date: maker’s initials "JRM" (the signature is impossible to photograph because of where it is but I guarantee you that it's there); not hallmarked for metal quality yet tested and guaranteed to be solid silver, most probably sterling; 1960s-70s
Condition: excellent vintage, very mod and eye-catching, with an impressive druzy pyrite filled with sparkle, with no damage and no repairs noted
