Mexican Deco silver turquoise Brooch ~ Pegasus, the winged horse
The bearer of Zeus's thunderbolts Pegasus, the winged stallion of Greek mythology, is also associated with literary and artistic inspiration. One of my favorite images from that period, he is always depicted striding the air with pride and confidence, his strong, wings working hard to raise that formidable body high into the lofty realms of the divine. And though quite far from his birthplace, his form is often depicted in vintage Mexican silver jewelry and over the years, I have had several beautiful examples of repousse Pegasus brooches. The one I am presenting here is rather unusual thanks to the extra hand-etched details in the horse's mane, wings and tail. which are further enhanced by oxidation and patina. I am also attracted to the subtle stroke of sage green contributed by the stallion's turquoise eye...
