Mexican Deco silver repousse Belt Buckle ~ Quetzalcoatl

SOLD

Breath-taking both in proportions and its masterfully executed repoussage this sterling silver Mexican Deco belt buckle is simply unbelievable. Its two mirrored parts represent Quetzalcoatl, the divine Moesoamerican Feathered Serpent, a motif which appears quite often in vintage Mexican silver jewelry. I have seen this specific design in buckle form signed by Doris in the past - my example is hallmarked yet not for maker and though the lack of signature is always vexing, it does not at all affect its strong presence, its craftsmanship and the effect it has on the viewer. The buckle can accept up to a 2" strap and it locks in place with the two serpents interlocking at the tail. Or one could have converted into brooches? Yet if you ask me, I could just as easily see it framed in shadowbox against dark red velvet and enjoyed as wall art...

Size / Weight: 7" long (with the two pieces locked together) by 4" tall (head to lowest tip of forked tail); 72.4 grams

Hallmarks / Date: "STERLING MEXICO" and des. no 1003; pre-1948

Condition: excellent vintage with impeccable finishing, craftsmanship of the highest levels, great patina and no damage or repairs noted - an absolute stunner of a piece!
