Mexican Deco silver repousse Necklace with cascabela
Hand-wrought in its entirety and a design that I have never encountered before, this early Mexican silver repousse necklace is an anonymous beauty. Its early date is attested to by the fact that it's strung on cotton thread (one of the earliest Aguilar "lyre" necklaces I sold was strung on cotton as well) and has a spring ring clasp. Not signed for maker nor metal content or origin, it is adorned by an elongated cascabela attached to the central station in an adorable yet naive way. I have to admit though that the repousse is very nicely done, exhibiting a certain ease and confidence. The tiny, bench-made beads forming the chain are a dream to look at and the design definitely inspired by pre-Colombian "archeological" motifs…
Size / Weight: 16 3/8" long (wearable); repousse links part is 6" wide with a total drop of 2 1/8" (including the dangle); chain beads diameter approx. 3/16"; 42.9 grams
Hallmarks / Date: not signed for maker nor hallmarked for metal content yet tested and guaranteed to be solid silver of at least .900 purity yet most probably sterling if not higher; 1920s-30s
Condition: excellent vintage with very nice repoussage, featuring an unusual early design, with the patina you want to see on a treasure of that period and no damage or repairs noted
