Markowitsch and Scheid 800 silver vermeil, enamel and seed pearl hinged Bracelet
Made in the period during which Georg Adam Scheid, the highly accomplished Austro-Hungarian silversmith, was still in partnership with his father-in-law, Michael Markowitsch, the elegant Viennese hinged bangle bracelet I am presenting here is wrought in .800 silver vermeil. Its thick application of black enamel is then etched to reveal a delicate floral spray dotted with tiny seed pearls. Technically a graceous example of late 19th c. "mourning" jewelry, it can nevertheless be worn and enjoyed today comfortably since its combination of colors and materials makes it as versatile as it is beautiful...
Size / Weight: inner circumference of 6 3/4" (clasped); 7/8" wide; 46.3 grams
Hallmarks / Date: fully hallmarked with the company's logo as shown as well as bearing the mark for "800" silver and the stamp for "small objects" that was introduced in 1872; 1872-1882 (the partnership was dissolved on that latter date)
Condition: very good vintage with shiny enamel, its vermeil finish having acquired a warm, mellow patina and a strong, working clasp; there is one tiny seed missing and two or three very small superficial flakes in the enamel but all are difficult to spot and do not really affect presentation
