Los Ballesteros Mexican silver tiger's eye "mask" Bracelet
I have said many times in the past that I consider the Los Ballesteros workshop Taxco’s foremost creator of the so-called “mask” jewelry. And among their best are their hinged bangle bracelets, a fantastic example of which I am presenting here. The effigy is carved out of tiger’s eye, a stone which creates a magical sensation with its molten gold, glistening caramel and rich chocolate browns. Serene under its heavy, ornate headdress the “face” looks as if in deep sleep, its features relaxed, as if the soul behind them has already reached the final destination in its journey to oblivion…
Size / Weight: 6 5/8” inner circumference (clasped); width between 1 3/4” at center front and 5/8”; 73.3 grams
Hallmarks / Date: fully signed with the workshop’s signature as shown as well as “STERLING 925”, “HECHO EN MEXICO” and Eagle 42 assay mark; 1950s-60s
Condition: excellent vintage with a superbly carved “mask” that smooth and free of problems, beautifully layered silver work, nice patina and no damage or repairs noted
