Mexican silver azur malachite "mask" Pendant Necklace
Signed by a listed “middle period” Taxco maestro primarily known for his repousse work, this 1950s carved azur-malachite and sterling “mask” pendant necklace is as stunning as it is unexpected. Dark blues, deep greens and earthy browns add depth and gravity to the stone, making the ancient figure’s features as stern in sleep as they must have been in that life lived centuries ago. The “mask” is big and bold and I love the generous prongs holding it in place at the top like bent antennae of a long lost insect. Hand-made twist-link chain, oxidation and overlay , great size and the patina you want to see on a well-loved, well-cared-for piece of jewelry all come together here in an amazing, one-of-a-kind necklace…
Size / Weight: pendant is 2 1/2” tall by 1 3/4” wide and the carving itself rises a whole 1” off its silver platform; chain is 23 1/2” long (the necklace’s wearable length); 89.2 grams
Hallmarks / Date: maker’s initials “E.S.” as shown as well as “STERLING HECHO EN MEXICO 925” and Eagle 3 assay mark; 1950s-60s
Condition: excellent vintage with a stunning “mask”, deep, saturated colors in the stone, great patina, eye-catching design with no damage and no repairs noted
