Gerardo Lopez mod Mexican silver and shell Necklace
One of my favorite "less celebrated" Taxco maestros, Gerardo Lopez has been steadily gaining in popularity among collectors of vintage Mexican silver jewelry. I suspect that he worked for the Los Castillo and / or Margot de Taxco before he started his own taller as his creations are often reminiscent of designs issued by both famous workshops. Lopez's repoussage is masterful and the finishing on his jewelry impeccable. Here, however, he espoused a more "two-dimensional" approach with evident modernist influences in the geometry of the "wave" links and the abalone squares, the shimmering rainbow colors of the shell being the only allowance to luxury...
Size / Weight: 15 1/2" long (wearable) by 1/2" wide; 56.5 grams
Hallmarks / Date: fully signed with Lopez's logo as shown as well as "HECHO EN MEXICO", "STERLING O.925" and Eagle 23 assay mark; 1950s-60s
Condition: excellent vintage with beautiful "peacock" abalone inlay, warmly glowing patina, easy to wear and a pleasure to behold, with no damage and no repairs noted
