FarFan Mexican silver and amethyst "mask" Bracelet
One of my favorite “less celebrated” talleres, Plateria FarFan was located in Mexico City and is responsible for some amazing jewelry. Their pieces are mostly of the so-called “archeological” style and even though quite often they are based on designs by more famous Taxco maestros, they did create beautiful originals themselves. Adorned with three carved amethyst “masks”, the bracelet at hand is an ode to the art of repousse. Sculptural and fleshy, the relief-work is here confident and perfectly finished and the “masks” with their varying amount of inclusions look stoically at the world, secure in their bezels…
Size / Weight: 7 3/8” long (wearable) by 1 1/4” wide; 63.4 grams
Hallmarks / Date: workshop’s signature as shown as well as “HECHO EN MEXICO D.F. 925” alongside Eagle 23 assay mark; 1950s-60s
Condition: excellent vintage with masterfully executed repoussage, great patina, three visually interesting amethyst “masks”, with no damage nor any repairs noted except for some excess solder that has been left on the back of the bracelet, right where the box of the clasp is located
