early Matl Matilde Poulat Mexican 900 silver and onyx "mask" Brooch
Wrought in .900 silver which Matilde Poulat used in the early period of her career this stunning silver repousse brooch develops around a carved black onyx “mask”. Matl’s work is always impressive - no one could ever blame her creations for timidity - but it seems to me that the repoussage of her first years is even bolder. One would think that the combination of exuberant silver-work, cleverly applied oxidation and the patina of time would clash with the austere minimalism of the carved portrait yet somehow all elements come together in the most fluid, seamless way. A Mexican Arts and Crafts treasure in your jewelry box…
Size / Weight: 2 3/16” tall (including the dangles) by 1 7/8” wide; 24.5 grams
Hallmarks / Date: maker’s signature in script as shown as well as “0.900”; 1934-40
Condition: excellent vintage with Matl’s tell-tale Mexico City style repoussage, great patina and high craftsmanship, a perfect “mask” and no damage or repairs noted
