Carmen Beckmann Mexican silver and agate Ring
This past year seems to have been a Carmen Beckmann year for One Good Eye Silver. And even though I cannot claim it was because of planning, it has not been entirely out of luck either. One of the few female contributors to Mexico’s 20th c Silver Renaissance that we know of, Beckmann’s jewelry are works of a confident designer, impeccably finished and at her best moments, incredibly creative as well. In the ring presented here I see a marrying of ancient motifs and modernist sensitivity as the sculptural overlay comes together with the piece’s otherwise austere geometry. Just the right amount of oxidation to add depth and that splash of cool, soothing greens in the polished agate complete a veritable mini objet d’ art …
Size / Weight: sz 6 US (resizable by your jeweler); face is 15/16” N-S by 11/16” E-W; 17.3 grams
Hallmarks / Date: maker’s signature as shown as well as “STERLING MEXICO”; 1960s-70s
Condition: excellent vintage with a gorgeous polished agate that looks like jade, great presence, beautiful patina and no damage or repairs noted
